Ocean views, coastal trails, and a drive along Highway 1 can turn a Big Sur proposal into a day you will both remember. But when you are trying to keep the ring hidden and the moment a surprise, a few practical details matter just as much as the scenery.
I’m Joel, the photographer behind Rizing Falcon Photography. I photograph proposals, weddings, and elopements in Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur, and help couples work through proposal details before the day arrives. Here is how I recommend approaching your plan.
Start with the experience your partner would enjoy
Before choosing a location, think about what would feel natural for the two of you. Would your partner love a coastal walk, a beach stop during a weekend in Carmel, or a quiet moment before dinner?
You do not need an elaborate setup to create a meaningful proposal. A simple plan gives you room to be present instead of worrying about a long list of moving parts. Decide whether you want the moment to be just the two of you or whether family will join afterward. That choice affects the location, timing, and photographer’s position.
Choose your Big Sur proposal location thoughtfully
When looking for places to propose in Big Sur, consider more than the view. Think about the walk, your partner’s comfort, parking, and how your photographer can see the moment without making the surprise obvious.
Garrapata State Park
Garrapata is an option to explore for couples drawn to coastal scenery south of Carmel. California State Parks describes the park as having two miles of coastline, including beach scenery. Review the official park information and current access before choosing a specific spot.
The exact proposal position matters more than the park name. Plan where you will stand, how you will approach, and where your photographer will be. Stay on open, established routes and well away from cliff edges and surf.
A beach proposal or coastal stop
If your partner loves the beach, ask about a location that suits your plans and walking comfort. Before committing, discuss beach access, tides, wind, and whether the setting works with the outfit and shoes your partner will be wearing.
Carmel as an alternative
A Carmel proposal can be worth considering if you are staying nearby or want to keep the day close to dinner and accommodation. Discuss a backup location with your photographer before the trip, rather than deciding under pressure on the day.
Public places do not guarantee privacy. Choose a plan that can adapt if other visitors are nearby, and confirm any photography or setup requirements with the relevant land manager.
Choose timing around light, weather, and your plans
There is no single best proposal time for every Big Sur location. The right time depends on the date, the setting, the weather, and what you want to do afterward.
Late-afternoon light can work beautifully, but do not lock in an exact time just because someone else proposed at sunset. Leave daylight for the walk back and for engagement portraits after the proposal. Ask your photographer to recommend timing for your particular plan.
Bring an extra layer and choose shoes suited to the route. If your partner will want to freshen up before photographs, quietly build that opportunity into the day.
Plan the surprise with your proposal photographer
Hiring a Big Sur proposal photographer is about documenting the question and reaction while making the logistics feel straightforward.
Before the session, agree on:
- The meeting area and exact proposal position.
- Photos of your outfits so the photographer can recognize you.
- The direction you will face and where your partner will stand.
- A clear, visible signal before you propose.
- What to do if you arrive early, run late, or find the spot occupied.
- Where any family members will wait and when they will join you.
Download maps and save your instructions before setting off. Make the plan usable without relying on a last-minute call or message.
Once you are in position, take a breath and focus on your partner. After the answer, give yourselves a moment together. There is no need to rush straight into posing.
Leave room for engagement photographs afterward
The first few minutes after a proposal are part of the story: the hug, the laughter, the ring, and the realization that you are engaged.
Plan time afterward for a relaxed couples session. This lets you enjoy the setting and create photographs to share with friends and family. If relatives are joining as a second surprise, coordinate their arrival so they do not accidentally reveal the plan beforehand.
Check travel, access, and permissions before the day
Check Caltrans QuickMap for road conditions before traveling, and review the official information for your chosen park or property. Confirm applicable photography permissions and any restrictions on flowers, decorations, or other setups before bringing them.
A backup plan should include a different location or timing option, plus an agreed way to communicate changes. Keep the day flexible enough that a change of scenery does not take away from the reason you are there.
